UCU Bags Crown in exciting IP Moot Court Finals

The 2026 World Intellectual Property Day celebrations reached an exciting peak with an intense moot court competition, in which Uganda Christian University (UCU) emerged the champion, showcasing the country’s brightest legal minds.

The competition was introduced as part of activities to mark World Intellectual Property Day 2026 under the theme “IP and Sports.” It aimed to deepen understanding of intellectual property issues in sports while building research, advocacy, and legal drafting skills among law students.

The contest attracted 11 universities from across Uganda, all competing through written submissions before the best four advanced to the oral rounds held in Kololo. The finals were highly competitive with a face-off between Uganda Christian University (UCU) and Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), with both teams demonstrating strong legal reasoning and confidence.

At the heart of the competition was a complex case touching on endorsement rights, trademarks, and broadcasting in sports, issues that reflect real challenges in the modern sports industry.

In the end, Uganda Christian University carried the day, earning praise for their clarity, teamwork, and deep understanding of intellectual property law.

The moot court was widely described as a highlight of the celebrations, drawing excitement from participants and spectators alike. It not only entertained but also reinforced the importance of intellectual property in shaping innovation, talent and commercial growth in Uganda’s sports sector.
