Ransomware A Growing Threat in the Digital Workplace

Ransomware is one of the most serious cybersecurity threats facing organisations today. It is a type of malicious software that blocks access to files or entire systems and demands payment, known as a ransom, to restore access.

For institutions like Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), where digital systems are central to service delivery, a ransomware attack can disrupt operations and compromise critical data.

Ransomware attacks often begin in simple ways, such as through a phishing email, a malicious attachment, or a compromised website. Once activated, the malware spreads through the system, encrypting files and making them inaccessible. This is why prevention and early detection are critical.

At an individual level, always be cautious when opening emails, especially those with unexpected attachments or links. Avoid downloading files from untrusted sources, and never share your login credentials. Keeping your computer updated with the latest security patches is also essential, as these updates fix vulnerabilities that attackers often exploit.

Regular data backups are another important defense. Backups ensure that even if files are encrypted, they can be restored without paying a ransom. However, backups must be securely stored and regularly tested to ensure they are reliable.

URSB’s ICT team continues to strengthen system security through monitoring, access controls, and awareness initiatives. However, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. A single careless action can open the door to an attack, while a single cautious decision can prevent one.
