At least 145 students from Makerere University joined a live online lecture on intellectual property last week, highlighting growing student interest in understanding how to protect ideas and creative work.
Ms. Fatuma Nakate delivered the one-and-a-half-hour Zoom session from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). The meeting focused on industrial property and copyright, key areas that affect innovation, creativity, and business.
Students pursuing Library and Information Science actively took part in the session, listening, asking questions, and sharing views during the discussion. The interaction made the lecture lively and practical with the knowledge given to them.
Ms. Nakate explained how intellectual property rights work, why they matter, and how students can protect their ideas and creative work. She also highlighted the role of URSB in registering and managing these rights in Uganda.
Students appreciated the session, noting that it helped them better understand concepts they had only read about in class. Many said the real-life examples made the topic easier to follow.
The lecture is part of ongoing efforts to connect students with professionals and give them practical knowledge beyond the classroom. Ms. Nakate noted that more sessions like this are planned to help students prepare for the job market.
