H.E. Rt. Amb. Francis Butagira, Board Chairman of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), has emphasized the enormous potential of intellectual property (IP) as a key driver for Uganda’s economic growth and innovation.
Drawing from his extensive diplomatic experience, Amb. Butagira highlighted the significance of attracting global leaders like WIPO Director General Daren Tang to Uganda.
“During our interactions in the past few days, I can assure you he is going to do a lot for Uganda,” he affirmed, expressing strong confidence in the benefits the visit would bring.
Addressing stakeholders, especially the youth, he reminded them that while natural resources can be depleted, intellectual property is inexhaustible, it is limitless.
“Modern economies thrive by harnessing IP,” he said, underscoring that IP is no longer just a certificate but a tangible asset that can be mortgaged or used as collateral, a largely unexplored opportunity in Uganda.
Amb. Butagira called for strategic engagements with banks and financial institutions to unlock the financial power of IP and support innovators.
He reaffirmed URSB’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant innovation ecosystem through strategic partnerships, expanding Technology Innovation Support Centres, establishing an innovation hub at URSB, and strengthening data systems to connect and empower young creators.
Uganda’s innovation future is bright, and intellectual property will be the unlimited asset propelling the nation’s growth.
