Commissioner IP Calls for Stronger IP Systems as URSB Celebrates Examiners’ Day

The Commissioner for Registration Services – Intellectual Property Mr. Robert Mugabe, has called for continued collaboration and innovation within Uganda’s intellectual property (IP) ecosystem. He made the remarks while delivering the opening remarks last week at the celebration of IP Examiners’ Day held at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre in Kololo.

We are here not as URSB, but as part of the family of the IP ecosystem. Every day we sit, approve, and review to ensure clarity and fairness

The event, organized as part of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) initiative to honor examiners, brought together both current and former IP examiners, alongside top and senior management of URSB.

In his speech, Mr. Mugabe commended the dedication of IP examiners, describing them as the backbone of Uganda’s innovation and protection systems. “We are here not as URSB, but as part of the family of the IP ecosystem. Every day we sit, approve, and review to ensure clarity and fairness,” he said.

He also revealed the development of a new Examination Guideline, a tool designed to make examiners’ work easier and more sustainable. “The book is not in perfection, but it is a work in progress,” he noted, adding that it reflects URSB’s commitment to continuous improvement.

The 2025 celebration also welcomed new examiners to the team, symbolizing growth and renewal within Uganda’s IP framework, and reaffirming URSB’s role in supporting creativity and innovation across the country.
