The Evolution of URSB: From Then to Now

URSB didn’t become what it is today overnight. Its growth is part of Uganda’s journey toward a more structured and digital economy.

A Brief History

  • Pre-1998: Business registrations were managed by the Registrar General’s office under the Ministry of Justice.
  • 1998: URSB was officially established as a semi-autonomous government agency to handle registrations and related services.
  • 2010s: URSB expanded its services to include intellectual property, marriage registration, insolvency services, and SIMPO.
  • 2020s: URSB embraced digital transformation—introducing online business registration, IP services, and now the intranet.

Today’s URSB

  • Provides fully digital services for business registration and IP
  • Promotes innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Supports national development goals

Looking Ahead

URSB’s vision is to be a world-class registration and regulatory agency, and the journey continues with digitalization at the center.
